Franciacorta International Circuit played host to the season finale of the 4 Round FIA CIK European Championship last weekend, where Alpine Academy affiliate Kean Nakamura-Berta was crowned CIK-FIA European Karting champion in OK Karts, winning the Championship by 2 points with a total of 82. Nakamura-Berta adds this trophy to his FIA CIK World Championship 2021 OKJ win.
The finale weekend in Franciacorta produced some exciting racing as the hotly contested front runners went head-to-head for the title. Nakamura-Berta came second in his super heat, then Powell and Turney finished third and eighth respectively in their heat. That in turn lifted all three in the intermediate classification and decided their grid positions for the final.
Taking to the track for the final, Kean initially fell back from the front row of the grid, but he found a rhythm and started to regain some of the lost ground. With his mid-race pace proving to be the best of anyone once he got into third behind Giltaire.
By Lap 22 of 24 Nakamura-Berta was in third behind VDK Racing’s Evan Giltaire, but the latter suddenly slowed and waved his rival by. Claiming the place, the young racer scored four more points than current leader Powell and as a result moved up two places in the standings, claiming the 2022 CIK-FIA OK European Karting Championship title
The Alpine Academy star made his step up into the OK karting series in 2022 from OK Junior, showcasing his natural talent for racing, he has become one-to-watch in the future of motorsport.
It was also a promising weekend for Infinity Sports Management’s Karters Douwe Dedecker and William Go. Dedecker continued his run of strong performances, by placing consistently as one of the quickest drivers in the OK heats. But suffered an unfortunate incident which ended in a DNF in the final. Whilst William Go was en route for a top 10 finish in the OKJ class in the final race, having made his way up from P19 to P8. Until he found himself caught up in an unlucky incident, where two drivers crashed in front of him, forcing him to brake hard and take avoiding action onto the grass on the last lap of the race.
Infinity Sports Management, Gary Catt reflected on the weekend:
"Kean winning the European championship last weekend was a great reward for all his efforts throughout the season. The title came in a way we didn’t expect, but that shouldn’t take away the results Kean has achieved this season. He has consistently been at the front in his first season out of junior karting and has shown that if he continues to develop in this way, he has a bright future ahead.
We were also really impressed with our other two drivers in Franciacorta. Douwe Dedecker was constantly the quickest driver in the OK heats and recovered well from a compromised qualifying session. An unlucky situation in the final took away his chance of a top ten finish.
William Go in OKJ also showed some great performances in his heats and continues to improve in his first season in European karting. He was also looking like he would finish in the top 10 before a last lap incident took him out of the race."
